Solid organisation saves jobs at Trinity

Great news from the Birmingham Post and Mail that the chapels have secured an agreement there will be no compulsory redundancies.

Congratulations to the chapel members who mounted a solid, united resistance to these proposals, voting massively in favour of a strike.

In praise of Unison activists

One thing inevitably lost in the coverage of the case of the four Unison activists banned from office after criticising the union’s leadership is the contribution they made to their local media.

As a former chief reporter who covered Bromley for a south east London weekly, one of my reliable contacts was Glenn Kelly, the local council’s Unison branch secretary.

We are all Trinity journalists now

This time next week, journalists on Trinity Mirror’s titles in the midlands are likely to have staged a strike in defence of jobs and journalism in the region and be planning their next move.

After a massive vote in favour, the members at the Birmingham Post and Mail, Coventry Telegraph, Sunday Mercury and Midlands Weekly Media titles plan to walk out on Thursday 30 July.

Tolpuddle: biggest and best in 175 years

NUJ Left activists were a visible and vocal presence at what veterans of the Tolpuddle Martyrs festival have described as the “biggest and best” ever.

The gathering is held annually in the Dorset village made famous by six 19th century agricultural workers who took an oath of allegiance to fight to improve wages and conditions for their fellow workers.

Massive vote for action at Trinity
20 July 2009

NUJ members working for Trinity Mirror in the midlands will meet later this week to discuss what action to take after a resounding strike vote.

Of those who voted, 84% opted to take industrial action and 97% for action short of a strike after the company announced plans to close nine titles and cut 17 journalists’ jobs in the region.

BBC to show ‘oldest columnist’ film

Blogger Jon Slattery is excited about a film being shown on BBC4 tomorrow about Rose Hacker, who was billed as the ‘oldest columnist in the world’ in her weekly slot in Jon’s local paper.

Rose, who Jon describes as “a remarkable woman”, was a committed socialist and anti-war campaigner who wrote for the Camden New Journal and Islington Tribune until she died last year aged 101.

Co-ordinate the Trinity fightback

News today that NUJ members in Middlesbrough are to ballot over threatened compulsory redundancies brings the total of Trinity Mirror chapels currently considering industrial action to five.

Members at the Evening Gazette are particularly angry that they are facing more cuts after jobs went six months ago, the NUJ reports.
